PN Sierra de las Quijadas (Sierra de las Quijadas National Park) protects representatives ambient of the Chaco Arido and the Monte, and its archaeological and palentological sites.

GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE AREA
The National Park was created in 1991 in order to protect representative ambient of the Chaco Arido and the Monte, and its archaeological and palentological sites.

It is situated in the northwest side of San Luis, in Belgrano and Ayacucho departments. It covers 150.000 hectares approximately.
PN Sierra de las Quijadas (Sierra de las Quijadas National Park) belongs to Monte de Llanuras y Mesetas and Chaco Seco eco-regions.

A vast plain with soft slopes in the east side composes the Chacho Seco eco-region. The weather is hot subtropical, with the highest temperatures of the continent. It has summer rains that vary between 500 and 700 mm. Because of the climates and geomorphologic variations there are five districts: “Chaco de derrames fluviales”; “Chaco Semiarido”; “Chaco Arido”; “Chaco Subhumedo” and “Chaco Serrano”. “Xerófilos” forests, savannahs and pastures dominate the region.

“Monte de Llanuras y Mesetas” eco-region, which belongs to the driest region of Argentina, has plains landscapes and stage mesetas. The weather is dry warm with rains between 100 and 200 mm and high termical amplitudes. The vegetation decreases to the south, “cardonales” and “algarrobos” dissapear. The fauna is similar to patagonic steppes.

NATURAL RESOURCES
Landscapes, flora and fauna
One of the most important reasons to design this area as a National Park was the singular geological formation situated in the north centre of the Hills, called Potrero de la Aguada. There is huge natural amphitheatre surrounded by abrupt walls made by sand and red “aglomerado”, where the erosion designs very original figures. There is a flora that is adapted to singular environmental conditions of the place, like dryer and erosion. An example of this group of vegetation is the “chica”, little tree typical of the Gran Cuyo that grows slowly and has a very strong wood. In that area there is vegetation composed by bushes like “jarilla”, “garabato”, “brea” and many cactus like “tunas”, “cardoncitos” and “puquis”. The environment receives contributions from the Chaco, like “quebracho blanco”, “algarrobo” and “espinillo”. In the west side of Sierras de las Quijadas runs Desaguadero River, which has created a vast flood plain, where grow “bosquecillos de chañar” and plants that tolerates salty ambient –called “halofitas”-.
In the area live “guanacos”, “pecaries de collar”, “conejos de los palos”, “maras” and pumas. Also the fauna of the Park contains many species that requires protection, like the “tortuga terrestre comun”, “halcon peregrino”, “aguila coronada”, “pichiciego menor”, “cardenal amarillo” and “reinamora”.

SUGGESTIONS
Visitors should remember that the National Park was recent created so that it doesn't have services for the visitor. It is recommended to take water and sun block.

CULTURAL RESOURCES

The Park has many evidences of antique human occupation, particularly in the section of the Hills called “pedemontano”. A few kilometres far from the Park's entrance there is an archaeological place, which has twenty “hornillos” or “botijas”, inside the perimeter of a big aboriginal settlement.

These ovens may be used to produce ceramic pieces. It is grey ceramic, with thin sides, similar cook and decoration. One of the “hornillos” has been conditioned for public visitations.

PALEONTOLOGICAL RESOURCES
In PN Sierra de las Quijadas (Sierra de las Quijadas National Park) had been found fossils of two dinosaurs specimen. One of them has a peculiar set of teeth, with beards that formed a kind of basket that permit them retain the “microorganismos” from water that they eat.
