CULTURAL RESOURCES
Hunters-collectors occupied Pampa de Achala in prehistorically times. Rests of artefacts that were found in the rocky eaves, where they used to live, represent their many activities. Many investigations that were done in the area detected the presence of projectile's tips and mortar caved in archaeological places' rocks. Probably they were places where people hunted because of the concurrence and disponibility of guanacos and their young's.
During conqueror period the area was part of a region inhabited by the comechingones (Altas Sierras, Valles de Punilla and Calamuchita), who considered Pampa de Achala a refuge against the spanish subjugation.
In the ends of 19 th century many groups of colonizing population consolidated there because of the nearness of the first Franciscan's chapel.
Nowadays it is recognized a traditional way of life for Pampa de Achala inhabitants, called “achalenses”. This population is represented by small owners, “puesteros” and unskilled labourer, whose families' lives in disperse houses, because of the economic use of the land.
They are isolated of techno-culture and market economy, developing activities like sheep and cattle breed, market and farmyard birds. The handmade products are a very important activities for their subsistence, specially leather works and weaving.
All this characteristics join a value, beliefs and typical feature system.
