GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE AREA
Los Venados National Park project
The Administración de Parques Nacionales wants to incorporate to the protected area system Los Venados de las Pampas National Park.
This project wants to conserve in this area the species that gives the name to the National Park and the last remainder of dirty pampas grass in San Luis.
The stag of the pampas, which is a specie in extreme danger of extinction, was declared Natural Monument of Buenos Aires and San Luis. Many illnesses transmitted by the livestock, the furtive hunt, the dog's attack and the destruction of the habitat can affect the stags. Nowadays there are in Argentina 1.000 specimen.
This specie existed in many areas of the pampas. Nowadays they can be watched in groups of four in a few places.
It lives in opened spaces and only uses little forests to find shadow. The male has horns and his forelegs has glands that produces a strong aroma, more perceptible in summer (the rut time), which can be smelt a kilometre around.
The young births in winter. In his first three months the young keeps the spotty fur that helps him to hide inside the grass.
