The small lake has a fluctuating 15.000 hectare surface. Between 1990 and 1995 the small lake suffered a continuous reduction. In the drier periods it had a 100 hectare surface. It is located 3600 metres over the sea level. And it is bordering by mountainous cordons.
Los Pozuelos small lake concentrates a rich and varied aquatic fauna that includes 44 species. The most amazing specie in the protected area is the flamenco, a bird that has a big size and lives in the beaches. They built mud nests, where they put eggs and eat seaweed and little invertebrates.
In the protected there are two important species -besides the flamenco- : the “parina grande” and the “parina chica”. They have different diets, so they don´t compete for food.
In the Cincel river´s mouth there are a lot of ducks, such as the “maicero”, the “barcino” and the “puna”, which is exclusive of the region and has blue beak.
Other species are the “gallareta andina”, the “gallareta cornuda”, and the “gallareta gigante”. They are aquatic birds that eat plants and little invertebrates.
