RN Formosa (Formosa Natural Reserve) was created in order to protect a representative sample of the eastern Chaco.

GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE AREA
The protected area was created in 1968 and has a 10.000 hectare surface. It is located in the west of Formosa province, between “El Yacaré” and “La Florencia” villages. The nearest town is Ingeniero Juárez, there is a 65 kilometers distance between the protected area and Ingeniero Juárez village.

This Natural Reserve belongs to the “dry chaco” eco-region. Its climate is warm, with absolute maximum temperatures in the continent. There are summer rains, which oscillate between 500 and 700 millimeters.

ACCESS
There are two ways to access to RN Formosa (Formosa Natural Reserve): from Formosa or from Ingeniero Juárez cities.

From Formosa City you have to take the route number 81 to access to the protected area. And from Ingeniero Juarez you must take the national route number 39.

NATURAL RESOURCES
Landscapes. Flora and fauna.
In the protected area there is an important flower diversity. In Teuco, Bermejo and Teuquito rivers banks there is a dense scrubland, whose characteristic species are: the “yellow stick”, the “ algarrobo blanco”, the “mora”, the “palo bolilla”, and the “zapallo caspi”.
In the Argentinean National Park System the only one “palo santo” protected sample is located in RN Formosa (Formosa Natural Reserve). Because its strong wood, the “palo santo” suffered a devastating exploitation. In the coastal areas grow dense forests. There are different species, such us the “sauce criollo”, the “palo bobo”, and the “aliso de río”.
A characteristic mammal of the region is the anteater, which is critically endangered. Other specie in the same situation is the “guazuncho” or “corzuela parda”.
The most important birds are the “speaker parrot” (that suffers an important pressure, because it is wanted as a pet), the “charatas”, and the “carpinterito de los cardones”.
Other outstanding specie is the chameleon. The chameleon has zygodactylous toes (fused into opposed bundles of two and three). It has a long, slender, extensile tongue; independently movable bulged eyes; and a prehensile (grasping) tail. Its body is flattened from side to side. Chameleons usually grows between seven and 10 inches.
Other species that inhabit the protected area are the “ yacaré ñato”, the “chajáes”, ducks, herons, bats, and the “ tatú carreta”.

WALKS AND SERVICES
In the protected area you can do different activities.
There is a camping zone, with bathrooms.
The "Monte Adentro" path cross the west chaqueño scrubland. The path has a 6.000 meters long. There you can see the most characteristic animals and plants. It is possible to return by a shorter way.

SUGGESTIONS
Remember that you are visiting a protected area, so it is recommended to respect established rules for a better conservation of the region.

-Return with the garbage that you had made.
-Remember that using heater is more practical, cleaner and safety than making fire.
-To make fire use fireboxes that have already existed or do it far from vegetation.
-It is banned the domesticate animals entry.
-Ask the forester for more information.
